Workshop (noun): a brief seminar, meeting, or the like, in which a group of people engage in intensive discussion, the exchange of ideas and the demonstration and application of techniques, skills, etc in a particular specialized field.
The term “workshop” in Carnatic music has today become synonymous w/ “class”; limited to the teaching of a number of kritis, however rare or specialized. But the workshop series conducted by Vidwan Sri TM krishna both in the Bay Area and Boston in fall 2011 will truly be a group discussion, an exchange of ideas. They will be highly interactive. The demonstration and application of techniques will involve singing and questioning on the part of participants.

ESSENCE OF A RAGAM
A ragam is more than just the sum of its swarams, its arohanam and avorahanam. In this workshop, Sri TM Krishna will delve into the essence of a ragam; the flavor and emphasis of different types of ragams based on their history and context. This ties in directly to how we can approach ragam development in our own singing.
